What’s New and What’s Next in Teams: The Features I’m Most Anticipating

In this post, I’m going to share with you some of the great features that Teams is introducing over the next few months. These features will help us work and collaborate more efficiently and quickly!

Hide General Channel

Lots of clients have asked me if they can get rid of the General channel in Teams. It’s the default channel that comes with every team, and you couldn’t hide it before. That was really annoying for people who had set up nice templates for their teams. However, Microsoft have heard us and now they’re letting us hide the General channel from our view. Don’t worry, it’s still there for each team, but you can choose not to see it if you want. This makes things much easier and nicer for us users! They’ve already started rolling out this feature, so look out for it on your tenant soon!

Calendar Notifications in Teams

I’m really looking forward to the new feature that lets you stay on top of your Calendar Notifications in Teams. You’ll get alerts for meeting invites, changes and cancellations right in your Activity Feed. Another step in the directions of Teams becoming the ultimate ‘one stop’ app for Microsoft, and this feature will make it easier to use the Calendar app in Teams to organise your schedule and meetings. This feature is due for roll-out February 2024, let’s hope the timelines are accurate and we’ll see this in the next few weeks!

Archive Channels

It used to be a pain for Admins and Owners to get rid of Channels they didn’t need in their Teams. The only option was to delete them and lose the data, unless you exported it first. But now there’s a new feature coming in February 2024 that lets you ‘Archive’ Channels instead. This means you can keep all the stuff in the Channel, like messages, files and tabs, and still do things like eDiscovery reporting on it. And if you ever need the Channel back, you can just restore it and make it live again.

Chat for Organisers and Presenters in Town Hall Meetings

I often host Town Hall meetings for things like internal training on a project. And I used to make a separate chat in Teams for the organisers and presenters to chat behind the scenes and make sure everything goes well. But now there’s a new feature that does that for you. It automatically creates a chat with the organisers and presenters for each Town Hall session you schedule. And you can use the chat before, during and after the event. This feature is coming out next month, March 2024.

Intelligent Recap for Copilot Users

One feature that you may already know about is Intelligent Recap, which is now available for Copilot users. This means that if you have a Copilot for Microsoft 365 license, you can use the Intelligent Recap feature that was only for Teams Premium users before. Intelligent Recap lets you get AI-powered summaries and actions from your meetings. You can also get automatically generated notes, tasks and jump to points in the meeting where you were mentioned. This is a brilliant feature added onto the Copilot for Microsoft 365 license. Another bit of good news is that this feature has been available since January, so you can use it right away!

There are so many great and useful updates coming to Teams soon! You don’t want to miss them, so keep an eye on your tenant and the roadmap for the latest news. Please leave a comment below or contact me on Linkedin for any further information.
